A Journey Through the Scented History of Palestine.
Since ancient times, Palestine has witnessed the rise and fall of many different civilizations, all of which were known for their agricultural prowess. This, in turn, proves that Palestinian culture is deeply rooted in agriculture and craftsmanship, a heritage reflected in the diverse range of scents, flavors, and colors associated with the region. Each village and city is known for its specific agricultural crops, fruits, trees, grains, herbs, and flowers. From citrus crops like oranges, lemons, and grapefruits to strawberries, cherries, figs, grapes, almonds, and olives, the land is bountiful and rich in all kinds of plants.
Furthermore, the rich history of Palestinian handicrafts finds its celebration through Méjana. Both women and men utilized the crops, herbs, and flowers yielded by the land not only in their popular foods but also in medicine and various handicrafts. The old cities are renowned for their professional artisans who specialize in creating exquisite handmade souvenirs crafted from leather, metal, straw, fabric, clay, and wood. Additionally, Palestinian culture has a venerable apothecary profession, known in Arabic as “Attar – عطار,” which encompasses the preparation and sale of spices, herbs, and essential oils for alternative medicine and simple cosmetology. This tradition extends to seasoning food and tending to livestock. In the modern age, this profession is recognized as both a "Perfumer" and a "Pharmacist."
